Droitwich secure Reserve League win & Promotion!

By

Saturday initially promised the 2nd XV an opportunity to cement promotion into Midlands Reserve League Division 2 against Sutton Coldfield 3rd XV. Frustratingly, as has been the norm this season, the opposition withdrew late on to leave Spa looking for a

The only upside being the league points were awarded to them and promotion is now confirmed to Midlands Reserve League 2 for the 2018/19 season.

Aston Old Edwardians offered a fixture at their home ground and was gratefully accepted, giving the Saltmen a chance to right the wrongs of the previous match against Harbourne.

From the kick off early pressure from the Monners put them in the home 22. Several opportunities were squandered as the ball was dropped over the line or held up on a number of occasions. A superb tackle in the try area of AOE by young gun Josh Olver gave an attacking scrum 5m from the line. A simply switch play from fly-half Ali Jones fed Andy Vizor who crashed over to open the scoring, and followed it up with a conversion. More pressure from the visitors led to a lineout close to the line. Matt Wilkinson, having moved to hooker, threw to a salmon-like Stu Thomas, some quick ball from Charlie Chalmers got Jones to feed Vizor once more who ran a direct line and got over for his second, converted again to lead 14-0.

Any ball AOE got tended to be in their half and got kicked away, fortunately solid covering from George Priddey, Jake Phillips & Tom Baker allowd for some flowing counter attacks. This lead to Chalmers dotting down in the corner and was followed shortly after when Reflex Stevens crossed with a strong run from the midfield. This extended the lead before half time to finish 26-0 ahead.

With changes rang at half time, a near enough entire new back line started the second half.

This did not change the flow of the game and as AOE began to tire, tries seemed to rain in. Direct running from Jamie Denby, Matt Wilkinson and Craig Browne kept the defence on the back foot. Josh Olver carried powerfully and broke the line at will, Ian Turner turned from prop to playmaker on several occasions as well.

The returning Nat Maginnis scored 2 and converted 4, Sam White crossed for one, Glenn Topping, young speedster Tom Baker and Reflex got his second to sew up the tries for the day. The try of the day saw a flowing move from a scrum, Ollie Wilkinson on at 10 hit powerhouse Jonny Lewis at 12 and looped round to recieve the pass back, hit Tim Cave who stepped and jinked past some defenders, passed onto Maginnis to draw and gave to Baker who ran and seemed to flop over the line to score a fantastic team try.

Overall a really good team performance with each player standing up to be counted. It is not the way the Saltmen would have ideally won the league this year, but it is consistent with a season that has been broken up by cancellations and postponements. Next week Old Hales visit the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground in a league double header, it is a dead rubber in terms of league position, but it will surely be a great game with the 1st XV close to sealing promotion themselves at home against Nuneaton Old Eds kicking off at 3pm aswell.
