Welcome to Droitwich 1st XV - Home of the North Midlands Shield Winners 2011

Droitwich 1st XV play their games in Midlands 2 West (South) at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground on the Hanbury Road, Droitwich.

The 2010/2011 season tested the nerve and strength of the squad and those who support the Club will say that it was a season of two halves for Droitwich 1st XV

The start to the season began with a win in the North Midlands Shield at home to Old Salts. The first home game in the league was a narrow defeat to the eventual champions, Dunlop. Injuries to key players followed that game which led to a recall to 47 year old Tony Rouse who came out of retirement to help the 1st XV to beat Old Silhillians at home.

Unfortunately, this was an end to the good news. An early exit out of the Intermediate Cup and successive defeats meant that by Christmas, the 1st XV were seriously looking at a relegation battle.

Weather interrupted play badly during the Christmas period and play was subsequently resumed in the second week of January 2011. The New Year started with a hard fought draw but although their play began to improve, victories were still hard to find during the month of January.

However, February brought a series of impressive games and good wins for 1st XV including victories in both local derbies against Kidderminster and Pershore at home. For the remainder of the season, DRFC 1st XV never lost a game and their hard work was subsequently rewarded with a win over the Champions, Dunlop in the final league game of the season.

It was, however, in the Shield where DRFC showed what improvements the second half of the season had brought and how those initial injuries had affected the team. The win in the North Midlands Shield was just desserts as DRFC showed their class over Aston Old Edwardians. Captain Phil Horton was immense throughout the game and led his team to much deserved silverware for the first time in their history.
