Sevens Victory Gets Seniors' Season off to a Flying Start

Droitwich Squad Wins RFU Sevens Tournament at Sixways

The Droitwich Seniors have got off to a flying start this season by winning the first Sevens Tournament they have entered this Summer. Director of Rugby, Adam Drew, says: "It's fair to say that our success last season was based on the prowess of our forwards so it was always going to be interesting to see how our backs would get on at this event".

The RFU tournament attracted clubs from across the North Midlands, Birmingham and Staffordshire including Stourbridge, Aston and Redditch. The squad romped home to a 55-0 victory in the first pool game against Erdington with Strutt, Bastock, Maginnis, Scott-Walker, Mills and Hanford all crossing the whitewash and Brad Smith bagging a hat-trick. The second pool game against Essington saw more of the same with Smith, Bastock, and Maginnis all adding to their tallies and Mortlemans notching up an impressive four tries. Droitwich ran out 54-0 winners despite having Middleton carded and really seemed to have the bit between their teeth.

The final pool game against Burntwood proved a sterner test with the opposition opening the scoring. However, Droitwich dug deep and eventually ran out 26-19 winners, thereby topping their pool. Unsurprisingly, Pool B winners, local rivals, Kidderminster, were the strongest opponents of the afternoon and opened the scoring with an early unconverted try. Droitwich seemed to have lost their early Sevens mojo and had slipped into taking too much contact and failing to keep the ball alive. Things went from bad to worse when Brown was uncharacteristically sin-binned. A frank half-time talk seemed to do the trick and Droitwich replied with two converted tries, one each from Smith and Bastock, to run out eventual 14-5 winners. This was not before a try-saving tackle from George Priddey ensured Droitwich were able to maintain their winning margin.

Sevens Captain, Bobby Scott-Walker said: "I was really proud of the lads on what was a sweltering hot day. It was great to see the fantastic footwork, handling skills and sheer pace that we have in our back line. Who knows, after that performance the forwards might even let us get our hands on the ball occasionally this season".

Sevens Coach Blair Hunter said: "The lads know that I'm a great believer in keeping the ball in hand and today proved that it's a wining philosophy. If you want to kick a ball around, go and play soccer".

This victory gets the Seniors off to a winning start to the season ahead of training starting on Tuesday 4th July at 7pm.
