EDF Energy Senior Vase - 2nd Round.

Droitwich moved slickly into the 3rd Round of the EDF Energy Senior Vase on Saturday with an entertaining 43 points to ten victory at Kings Norton.

The opening exchanges were even, and it was the home side that had the better of the territory, but could not turn their possession into points as they missed two penalty kicks at goal.

Droitwich advanced upfield and a quick lineout by the alert Nick Godfrey found Sean Walker who was brought down just short of the line, the ball was recycled for veteran Duncan Hughes to breeze over unopposed.

A penalty deep inside Droitwich’s ’22 was quickly taken; Ross Coombes made a break to find the tireless Godfrey who linked with John Critchlow to power over to double the lead. Again Hughes added the extra points, and collected a penalty soon afterwards. Kings Norton hit back with a penalty of their own.

The start of the second half saw Droitwich step up a gear with back row forward, Phil Horton, being outstanding. He took a kick inside his own half and powered his way down the field beating eight defenders to score under the posts. Hughes converted.

Another strong run by Horton found Steve Poke in support to feed the excellent Critchlow who sprinted over for his second of the day.

The home side hit back as Droitwich took their foot off the gas, good pressure created a series of scrums near the visitor’s line. Droitwich had possession, but lost it to give Kings Norton a well deserved try.

More good work by the Droitwich pack, saw James Shewell and Harry Riley create space for Horton. Again he showed a superb turn of speed to race in for his second of the afternoon. Hughes kept up his 100% conversion record.

As the game came to an end a break by Coombes found Critchlow again to surge towards the line, he fed fellow centre Matt Blackmore to dive over.

A highly enjoyable afternoon, with Droitwich playing some excellent running rugby. Man of the match Phil Horton added “we came to play an open game and certainly succeeded. We are getting more confident with every outing this season. It’s always nice to get a few points on the board .”
