Droitwich 22 - Bedworth 3
Saturday, October 6, 2007
Droitwich turned in their most fluid display of the season to beat Bedworth at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground on Saturday.
The early exchanges were even, before Droitwich were penalised for not releasing after a tackle. The visitors duly kicked the penalty.
The scores were levelled when Duncan Hughes replied with a penalty, before centre Matt Blackmore slotted a cheeky drop goal after quarter of an hour.
The home side were now raising the tempo, with back-row forwards Nick Godfrey, Phil Horton and Jon Andrews leading the way. Slick handling involving Craig Goode, Steve Poke and captain Dean Goddard saw the Spa side advance up the pitch before the ball was moved wide to Craig Mortlemans to sprint in to score. This left the half time score at 11 points to three.
The second period continued in the same vein with Droitwich becoming more and more confident, and only good defensive work by Bedworth kept the home side at bay.
A clever kick by Sean Walker saw Droitwich advance deep into the Bedworth ’22. The ball went through several phases before Ross Coombes seemed to squeeze in at the corner, but was adjudged to have been bundled into touch. From the resulting lineout a strong drive by the home pack saw Godfrey power his way over.
Droitwich seemed to take their foot off the gas, but still managed to produce some excellent rugby with Horton to the fore. Hughes added two late penalties to put the game beyond reach.
Overall this was a fine display by the young Droitwich side, both backs and forwards showed a dynamism and hunger for the ball.
Matt Blackmore was clearily pleased with the display adding “this was our most complete display of the campaign to date. Hopefully we will continue in this way and have a real purple patch.”
Droitwich travel to Kings Norton next week to play the second round of the EDF Energy Senior Vase.
