Ludlow 7 - Droitwich 31
Saturday, April 21, 2007
Droitwich turned in their finest performance of the season to comfortably beat Ludlow on Saturday. The home side, who play their rugby in the league above Droitwich, had no answer to the Spa side's aggression and dynamism, especially in the loose, where veteran Nick Godfrey was outstanding.
Droitwich opened the scoring when Ross Coombes ran a superb line to cut the defence to ribbons to feed Sean Walker who raced in to score.
No.8 Jim Richardson then increased the lead as he powered over from a scrum. Duncan Hughes added the conversion.
Ludlow hit back with a try of their own before Richardson scored again in open play, following good approach work by James Davies and Mark Strutt.
The second period saw the visitors up their work rate and begin to dominate the scrums and lineouts to secure a steady stream of possession.
A neat break by scrum half Steve Poke saw livewire Leon Hopkins take a pass to breeze over, before young winger Mike Jones ran an excellent line to go over for his maiden 1st team try, Hughes added both conversions.
This was a stunning display by Droitwich which sees them into the semi-finals. Director of Rugby, Jon Andrews was clearly delighted, “This was probably the best we have played all season, remarkable when you consider what we have already achieved this season. We are now totally committed to progressing further.”
