Cleobury Mortimer 8 - Droitwich RFC 44

Saturday, November 25, 2006

Droitwich visited Cleobury Mortimer on Saturday and produced a workman like performance to come away with a 44 points to eight victory.

In good conditions the opening period was evenly matched before Droitwich outside half Duncan Hughes kicked a penalty after ten minutes. Droitwich now raised their game and quick ball was passed out wide to full back Teddy Jones who squeezed over in the corner, although the home side hit back with a penalty kick of their own. More pressure by the Spa side saw captain Jim Richardson power over to score. From a similar position Richardson fed back row colleague Phil Horton who also crashed over. Droitwich took the 18 – 3 lead into half-time.

The second period saw Droitwich again raise the tempo of the game and a dynamic rolling maul forced the home side back to their line before Nick Godfrey surged over to score. Hughes added the conversion.

Quick thinking by Godfrey saw him take a tap penalty in his own ’22. Richardson then took the ball on to feed Ben Cottrell who found support from Paul Sweeney, Cottrell then took the pass back to outpace the defence and race home for the try of the game. Not to be outdone fellow centre Shaun Walker threw a clever dummy to score himself.

More driving forward play saw hooker Ben Skinner go over for his first senior try. Droitwich made some changes with Lee Jarrett coming into the unfamiliar role of second row, and acquitting himself well, along with Richard Syree who came on at scrum-half for his senior team debut.

Cleobury hit back with a try at the death, but this could not affect the outcome. Droitwich will be pleased with the win and some of the rugby they produced, although not quite so with their inconsistency, a point echoed by try-scoring centre Ben Cottrell, who added “Its great to come away from home and get a win, but we’ll be concentrating on maintaining the tempo in training this week.”

Old Halesonians' defeat away to Berkswell & Balsall means that Droitwich RFC are now top of the Midlands 4 West (South) table on points difference, but with a game in hand.
