Berkswell & Balsall 7 – Droitwich 13

Monday, November 6, 2006

Droitwich maintained their unbeaten start to the league campaign with a hard fought victory at previously undefeated Berskswell.

The visitors played up the slope in the first period and immediately found themselves under pressure from the larger Berkswell pack. A strong home scrimmage saw Droitwich collapse and a penalty try was awarded to give the home side a seven nil lead. This was how the score remained until the interval.

In the second half Droitwich adapted their tactics with half backs Ross Coombes, who had a first rate game, and Duncan Hughes kicking down the slope for territorial advantage. This, coupled with the splendid lineout work of Paul Sweeney and fine loose play by Nick Godfrey and Gavin Reese, ensured Droitwich had enough possession to apply pressure. Hughes reduced the arrears with two well struck penalties. Then, as the game went into the final quarter, a strong run by stand-in skipper Jim Richardson saw him crash over under the posts with Hughes adding the conversion. Berkswell did come back strongly as Droitwich had a player in the sin bin, but the visitors managed to hang on to their lead.

After the game Richardson was delighted with his team’s display, adding “the whole team worked tirelessly for the full 80 minutes. We once again stepped up a gear when needed.”
