Copsewood 6 – Droitwich 48
Sunday, September 24, 2006
Droitwich maintained their 100% record in Midlands Division 4 on Saturday with an emphatic win at Coventry based Copsewood.
Both teams exchanged penalties early on with Duncan Hughes slotting two for the Spa side, before a typically robust break from No.8 Jim Richardson saw him feed Leon Hopkins to race over. Full back Ross Coombes increased the lead when he hit the line intelligently to carve open the home defence. Copsewood hit back with a penalty, before Droitwich pulled further ahead when Ben Cottrell made an outside break to sprint in from 30 metres out. Richardson then added one of his own when he collected Steve Poke’s pass to force his way over.
Droitwich turned round at half time 34 points to 6 to the good, but were, inevitably, unable to keep up the high tempo throughout the second period. Nevertheless Droitwich extended their lead when good approach work by young prop forward James Shewell saw Phil Horton crash over. Shewell then drove at the home line to touch down himself. The later period saw Droitwich get a little sloppy and give away a string of penalties, although the game was already decided.
The victory sees the Spa side head the league table on points difference, although captain, Dean Goddard remains cautious adding, “there are many hard games to come, but we are improving with every game and will continue to put in the hard yards.”
