Droitwich RFC U16's 34 - Bredon RFC U16's12

Monday, September 18, 2006

The first game of the season for both sides saw Droitwich U16's grind out a hard earned victory over Bredon. Droitwich starting brightly with the power of their pack driving Bredon back, but slick handling skills from Bredon throughout the first half ensured Droitwich were made to defend and it was Bredon that opened the scoring early on to take a seven point lead.

Droitwich came back strongly to reduce the deficit with an unconverted try by Luke Harris. Bredon then struck back to regain the lead but it wasn't long before Jack Pomroy scored Droitwich's second to give Bredon a 12 - 10 lead at half time.

The second half saw Droitwich raise their game and the tries began to flow. David Edwards crashed into a flood of players to cross the line and give the home side the lead for the first time in the match. This was shortly followed by Matt Thorneycroft and Shaun Hooper who both took their chances well to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The final try, and best of the day, was scored by Adam Gwilliam after Will Baillion fooled the whole of the Bredon defence into thinking he was about to kick from hand, only to see Gwilliam take the ball and run through almost unchallenged. Gwilliam also scored two of Droitwich's conversions.

There were good performances by a number of players including M.O.M. Charlie Fry, Jake Rainsford and Danny Garner ensuring Droitwich's season got off to a good start.
