Worcester Wanderers 14 – Droitwich 29

Sunday, September 17, 2006

Droitwich deservedly won this local derby to maintain their unbeaten start to the league season.

Droitwich pressed the home line from the start and a good drive from Phil Horton’s lineout take saw the ball fed to veteran Duncan Hughes, who cleverly cut inside and used his bulk to force his way over for a try. Hughes added the conversion. The home side then responded with pressure of their own, but strangely rejected the chance of three points by elected to scrummage a penalty in front of the Droitwich posts. Worcester did, however, eventually manage to convert a penalty.

A good run by Jamie Faulkener saw Droitwich return to the Worcester half, and from the resulting scrum No.8 Jimmy Richardson picked up to power thirty metres to score a fine individual try.

The second period saw both sides try and play attacking rugby, although it must be said the penalty count was abnormally high as both teams seemed to make a string of errors. It was from a turn over that saw Matt Jupp feed Faulkener to sprint 60 metres to score. Worcester hit back with two penalties, before good pressure by Droitwich saw Hughes throw a clever dummy before feeding full back Ross Coombes to run in unopposed under the posts.

With time rapidly running out Worcester threw everything they could at the visitors and were rewarded with a try, but it was never going to change the outcome, as Droitwich ran out deserved winners.

A delighted Droitwich captain Dean Goddard said “this was a very satisfying display, I thought our forwards were superb.”
