Evesham 8 – Droitwich 27
Monday, September 11, 2006
Droitwich opened their league campaign with a composed victory at Evesham. With conditions ideal for rugby both teams seemed determined to use the full width of the pitch. The home side opened the scoring with a penalty, before Droitwich No.8, Jim Richardson powered over. Duncan Hughes, making his first start of the season added the conversion.
After a slick move, centre Ben Cottrell showed his pace to score, before Richardson added a second to his tally. Evesham hit back with a try of their own following a kick down the field.
Droitwich’s forwards maintained their grip on proceedings as the game wore on, showing great determination, especially at the breakdown, where a good supply of ball was secured, especially by Nick Godfrey and Phil Horton.
In the dying seconds Droitwich completed the scoring, when Sean Walker broke through the home defence to score. Hughes added the conversion.
Captain, Dean Goddard, was pleased with the result adding “this is a great result to start the season, coming to Evesham is always difficult, but we played well as a team today.”
