Droitwich RFC Tens Tournament 2006

Saturday, August 19, 2006

Droitwich’s annual ten a-side tournament proved a success again on Saturday, and also saw a new name go on the winners trophy, as invitation side The Pacific Blues ran out deserved winners.

Nine teams took part in the competition with pool A being won by Droitwich 1st XV, with Bromsgrove’s top side also accompanying them into the knockout stages. In pool B the Pacific Blues, an invitation side comprising numerous southern Pacific players, comfortably won. Pershore claimed the runners up spot.

The first semi-final proved a nail-biter with Droitwich and Pershore locked at 12 all. Sudden death extra time was played, and Leon Hopkins broke clear for Droitwich to send the hosts into the final. The other semi-final saw the Pacific Blues overcome Bromsgrove.

In the final the Blues took an early lead and looked the stronger side, although to Droitwich’s credit they came back strongly and were unlucky at the end not to grab a score to equalise and send the game into extra time.

Ludlow beat Malvern in the final of the Plate competition.

Despite losing in the final, the tournament was a success for Droitwich 1stXV. During the day Droitwich beat local rivals Pershore, Ludlow, Malvern and most surprisingly Bromsgrove (12-5).

Captain Dean Goddard was very proud of his team and commented “This will surely give the squad a huge boost in its quest for promotion this season. Pre-season training has gone well and our fitness levels are higher now than at this stage last year.”

Droitwich’s player of the tournament was Jim Richardson, whose strong running was a constant threat to all opposition, although Phil Horton showed up well after a lengthy lay off through injury.

Droitwich, now coached by Dan Protherough, are looking for new faces to take the club forward this season. Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.00pm.
