Shipston-on-Stour 49 - Droitwich 12
Saturday, April 8, 2006
For the sake of completeness here is a brief report on our final league game of the season.
Droitwich travelled to Shipston knowing that promotion was beyond them and with little to play for they proceeded to give their least competitive performance of the season. Shipston, on the other hand, were desperate to win to escape the threat of relegation. The difference in motivation was clear to see.
The first half was a relative stalemate as Shipston's greater effort was neutralised by having to play up the slope. Droitwich failed to secure much quality ball and the backs showed little adventure. Leon Hopkins managed to gather a chip from Ben Cottrell and power over in the corner for his sixteenth try of the season.
The second half was virtually all one way traffic. Shipston used their superior strength and organisation in the forwards to consistently maul Droitwich down the slope. Droitwich were rarely out of their own half. A flood of tries followed for Shipston. Hopkins managed to break away to score under the posts - converted by Pete Murphy, but Droitwich were convincingly defeated.
