Droitwich U17's triumph in Midland Shield Final

Droitwich made hard work of a very committed Bedford team but were pleased to come away from the game with the victory.

The first half was played in a strong wind going down the pitch. Droitwich used the conditions well but could not capitalise on the many chances they had to score until late in the half Alex Shaw put Droitwich into the lead with a penalty kick. This was the only score of the first half. Good defence from the Bedford midfield and full back kept droitwich at bay with very good kicking from their outside half.

The second half started well for Bedford who were attacking for the first 10 minutes of the half. Droitwich defended well. Ted Lang and skipper Moshen Yafai made some big tackles to ensure that Bedford were tryless in the game. Both teams exchanged penalties with the game going into what was thought to be extra time.

Outstanding individual runs from Ted Lang, Scott Morris and Tom Richmond off the base of the scrum got Droitwich into the Bedford half where the ball was fed out to the speedsters, Stefan Buijuisters making good yards before he released David Pitt who showed great pace to go round the winger and full back to score under the posts. The excitement of the try was evident from the players and supporters alike.

With 5 minutes to go the Droitwich pack showed their high skill level with a tremendous maul from the Bedford 10 metre line with Chad Richardson popping out with the ball to crash over the line. Alex Shaw converted the difficult touchline conversion.

There were some outstanding performances from the players, especially Andrew Green. Mohsen Yafai had a captains performance and Scott Morris also impressed.

The Under 17's now look forward to the 1/4 final of the North Midlands Cup against Whitchurch. The winners of that match will play local rivals Worcester or Moseley at the Glynn Mitchell Memorial Ground.
