Cleobury Mortimer 17 - Droitwich 31
Sunday, March 19, 2006
Droitwich turned in a much improved performance to defeat Cleobury Mortimer on Saturday in this re-arranged league fixture.
The Droitwich pack concentrated on doing the simple things well, which proved highly effective with hooker Dean Goddard having an excellent game. After good work by prop Ben Thomas, Craig Burgess created space for the outside backs, with Chris Hooper rounding off the move to score. Full back, Steve Poke was then on hand to add to the score. Burgess himself then went over. The homeside hit back with two scores of their own, although excellent work at the lineout by James Davies and Paul Sweeney, was taken on by the tireless captain Nick Godfrey to allow centre Leon Hopkins to show his exceptional pace and balance to run in another try.
The second period saw much of the same as the Droitwich support play was as good as it’s been all season, and forwards laid the platform for the experienced Jon Andrews to go over and complete the scoring.
Droitwich will be very pleased with this performance and will now aim to win their remaining games and achieve a top four finish.
