Droitwich 5 - Worcester Wanderers 8

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Droitwich went down to Worcester Wanderers in a league encounter on Saturday for the second time this season. The game was a scrappy, shapeless affair which the visitors deservedly won.

Droitwich started brightly when scrum half Steve Poke noticed there was no full back and hoisted an intelligent chip kick. Will Bolton followed up excellently and scored. Chris Hooper was unable to get the difficult conversion. After this bright opening Droitwich seemed unable to string any quality phases together and it was Worcester who had the upper hand. Four kickable penalties were missed by the visitors before one was successfully completed. This left the half time score at 5 – 3 in Droitwich’s favour.

The second period was much the same with Worcester having the better of the exchanges, but Droitwich launching some attacks of their own, although both sides appeared to run out of ideas when in the oppositions' 22. Droitwich were dealt a further blow when they were reduced to 14 men due to injury. The home side's slender lead held for almost all of the second period, before quick ball from a line out was moved quickly down the line for the Worcester outside-centre to squeeze home in the corner with less than two minutes remaining. Droitwich did launch one last effort but never seriously threatened the Worcester line.

Droitwich will be deeply disappointed with this lacklustre performance, and must up their work rate to ensure a credible league position is secured.
