Marconi Coventry 15 - Droitwich 24

Saturday, February 18, 2006

Droitwich got back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard fought victory at Marconi. Droitwich will not be over impressed with their performance, but on the back of three straight defeats, a victory was the important thing.

Marconi took the lead with a drop goal after Droitwich failed to clear their lines, although a try by full back Chris Hooper put the visitors into the lead. The try was converted by Hooper. Droitwich then upped the tempo and the tireless and impressive James Davies went over after good approach work by Droitwich forwards Richard Pedley and Paul Sweeney. Again Hooper converted. The home side hit back with a try just before the break with a catch and drive from a lineout.

The second half again saw Droitwich look good, but too often the final pass went astray, or was not given when an overlap was on the cards.

Hooper went over for his second, to give Droitwich breathing space, then after a flowing back move veteran forward Jon Andrews appeared on the wing to crash over from 2 metres.

Marconi came back and scored the try of the game at the death, but by this time the Spa side had done enough to secure the points.

A win which Droitwich will be relieved with, but they must learn to make the most of their opportunities if they are to secure a top four finish in the league.
