Droitwich RFC 27 - Old Edwardians 21
Saturday, October 29, 2005
A fine first half performance by Droitwich saw them record an excellent 27 points to 21 victory over table topping Edwardians.
Droitwich had the strong wind on their backs in the first period and immediately established forward supremacy. A lineout take by Paul Sweeney was driven forward for captain, Nick Godfrey, to be held up short for Steve Poke to dart over in the corner. More pressure by the home side saw Phil Horton charge down a clearance, No.8 Jimmy Richardson took the ball on before cleverly off-loading to Leon Hopkins to double the lead. Confusion in the Edwardians defence was seized upon by Ben Cottrell to set up Will Bolton for another fine score. Another lineout drive by the Spa side saw Godfrey touchdown. Debutant fly-half Phil Murphy then switched the play to set up Richardson for a twenty metre dash for the line. Edwardians hit back with two penalties.
The second period was tougher for Droitwich as Edwardians had the wind advantage and upped their work rate. Two tries brought the visitors back into the game, but good Droitwich defence kept them at bay. Outstanding contributions were made by hooker Dean Goddard and veteran prop Greg Garfield.
Overall an excellent win for Droitwich, one that sees them consolidate their third position in the table. Victory for Stourbridge Lions against Old Hales lifted them to the top of Midlands 4 West (South) with Old Eds dropping to second on points difference.
