Worksop 12 – Droitwich 24

Droitwich progressed to the third round of the Powergen Junior Vase on Saturday with a well deserved win at Worksop.

The visitors started slowly, clearly showing the effects of the long journey and it was the home side who opened the scoring with a converted try after what can only be described as lacklustre defence.

This seemed to galvanise Droitwich who stepped up a gear and began to take control of the game, with Dean Evans and Ben Cottrell kicking intelligently to pin Worksop back in their 22. A well executed box kick by scrum-half Steve Poke was gathered by Jim Richardson, who was hauled down metres short, only for Poke to be on his shoulder to take the pass and score. Evans added the conversion.

Shortly before half time the ball was moved down the back line to Spa winger Leon Hopkins, who seemed to have absolutely no room whatsoever. However, once again Hopkins showed his magic to beat three defenders and score a wonderful solo try. The score remained 7 – 12 at half time.

In the second period pressure by the Droitwich pack affected a charge down for Phil Horton to power over, again Evans added the extra points. More good work by Droitwich saw Horton go over for his second after he broke from the back of a ruck. Worksop got a consolation try at the death.

Man of the match for Droitwich was Steve Poke who showed dynamism and skill at scrum half. Droitwich now await their opponents in the third round, but will be hoping for a home draw after two visits to Derbyshire.
