Droitwich 42 – Marconi Coventry 0

Droitwich bounced back from last week’s disappointing defeat at the hands of Worcester Wanderers by producing their best performance of the season to date.

Droitwich played into the strong wind in the first half and adopted a policy of keeping the ball in hand, and getting it out wide whenever possible. It was quick ball to winger Leon Hopkins that produced Spa’s opener. Hopkins took the ball in his own half, chipped ahead, gathered the ball, and out-paced the defence for a fine solo effort. Matt Blackmore added the conversion. Shortly afterwards No.8 Jimmy Richardson powered over from 15 metres.

After the interval, Droitwich, with the wind on their backs, really cut loose. A poor clearance from the visitors was charged down by skipper Nick Godfrey and Blackmore seized on the loose ball to score under the posts. Hopkins then added a second following a flowing three-quarter move, and completed his hat-trick following confusion in the Marconi defence. Blackmore added a penalty to stretch the Spa lead even further.

In the dying stages Jon Andrews was held up short only for veteran prop Greg Garfield to power over from short range. Blackmore again converted.

Droitwich will be most satisfied with this performance. The forwards performed well both in the loose and tight phases, and the backs produced some excellent running, handling and support play. This was typified by live-wire winger Hopkins, who bagged a hat trick.

Droitwich RFC are now in 3rd spot after three matches in Midlands 4 West (South) and have the best points difference.
