Worcester Wanderers 15 – Droitwich 12

Sunday, September 25, 2005

Droitwich travelled to near neighbours Worcester Wanderers for the first league meeting between the two sides, and produced a lacklustre performance before going down 15 points to 12.

The visitors opened brightly enough and scored the first points when centre Ben Cottrell ran a good line to score, Matt Blackmore added the conversion. The lead was then increased when a loose kick was fielded by Jamie Faulkener, who opened up the defence to feed Leon Hopkins to score.

Droitwich then, however, seemed unable to raise their game when Worcester came back at them. They were struggling to guarantee a consistent supply of ball, both from tight and loose phases. The home side reduced the arrears with a converted try just before the interval.

The second period saw Droitwich become more mediocre as Worcester seemed to raise their game. In the forwards there was only Jim Richardson, with some stirring running, and Phil Horton who seemed to play to their potential.

Worcester levelled the score with a try and, with 3 minutes remaining, sealed the game with a penalty.

Droitwich will be very disappointed with this display, not only because of the poor result, but also the manner in which they performed.

The 2nds fared much better in their match against Worcester 2nds. They won by 50 points to 3 with seven tries being scored by Simon Pearce (3), Will Hobbs, Craig Burgess, Dean Evans and Pete Murphy. Dean Evans added six conversions and a penalty.
