Droitwich 48 - Harbury 12

Droitwich opened their Powergen Midlands 4 West (South) league campaign with an impressive 48 – 12 victory against newly promoted Harbury on Saturday.

The visitors started strongly with their heavy pack putting the home side under severe pressure, although it was Droitwich who opened the scoring with a penalty from Matt Balckmore.

Droitwich then produced good line-out ball for Blackmore to throw a clever miss-pass to Ben Cottrell who beat two men to race 70 metres for a stunning try.

Harbury hit back with a try, after Droitwich failed to clear their lines, just before the interval.

The second half saw the home side up their work rate, with a steady supply of ball being produced, especially courtesy of veteran back row forward Jon Andrews. The Spa backs then went up a gear with electric winger, Jamie Faulkener, running in two tries. Skipper Nick Godfrey also touched down when the Droitwich pack disrupted a Harbury scrum.

Soon after Blackmore made a break and found debutant No.8 Jimmy Richardson on his shoulder to touchdown. Cottrell then added another from five metres out following a clever back row move.

As a result of their dominance a little bit of complacency crept into the Droitwich team and Harbury took advantage to score a try that came very much against the run of play.

In injury time an intelligent Blackmore chip was seized on by the effervescent Leon Hopkins to complete an excellent display by Droitwich.

Hooker Ben Thomas was awarded Man of the Match for a strong all-round performance. Droitwich top the league table on points difference after the first week's action.
