Kidderminster 2nd Team Cup Competition

Sunday, March 6, 2005

Droitwich's 2nd Team made the short trip to Kidderminster to participate in their new look 2nd Team Cup Competition. Five teams were involved in the daylong competition – Worcester Wanderers, Aston Old Edwardians, Old Halesonians, Droitwich and Kidderminster. Each team played four 20-minute games in a ‘round robin’ format.

The day began well for Droitwich with a resounding 13 points to 8 victory over local rivals Worcester. The two tries here came from prop Matt Jupp and captain Craig Goode.

Unfortunately, Droitwich had peaked to soon and couldn’t sustain their previous level of performance. They narrowly lost their next game to Kidderminster, despite a glorious solo effort from inside centre Gareth Knight and another try from skipper Craig Goode.

The Spa side regrouped for their third consecutive match against the favourites, Aston Old Edwardians. Droitwich produced a solid performance here and were unlucky to lose.

Droitwich 2nd Team then had a 40-minute break until their next match against Old Halesonians. This break seriously hindered Droitwich’s progress in the competition, as lactic acid set in to a group of very tired players, the majority of who had played a full game the day before.

The Spa side were easily beaten by Old Hales, and finished fourth in the competition. This was a satisfactory outcome for Droitwich who had taken a thrown together fifteen, as they finished ahead of rivals Worcester Wanderers!
