Droitwich 2nd XV 51 – Ledbury 2nd XV 5

Saturday, March 26, 2005

The Droitwich 2nd Team produced the best performance of any senior team this season in this highly entertaining fixture.

Droitwich took the lead early on through a Mark Strutt try – going over in the corner for his first senior score. Ledbury hit back with a try of their own, thanks to some sustained forward pressure and a quick penalty.

This spurred on the Spa side, who scored another eight tries without reply.

With the scores level at 5 – 5, a good break and offload by Dean Evans saw mobile hooker Dean Goddard sprint home from 25 yards out. This try was a good example of the value of converting an inside centre into a hooker!

The Droitwich backs produced some scintillating football to add the other seven tries. Four superb tries came from Droitwich and England Colleges’ outside centre Sean Walker, who was justifiably named as the man of the match after the game. Two of his tries were a reward for some good support play, but the other two were a bit more special. His third try saw him collect the ball just in from the touchline outside the Ledbury 22 and beat almost the entire Ledbury team to score in the opposite corner. At the time everybody at the Glynn Mitchell Memorial Ground thought they had seen the best try of the day. They were wrong.

Just a few minutes later, the superlative Jamie Faulkener put a 30-yard, inch perfect kick just over the Ledbury try line. Walker outpaced his markers and acrobatically launched himself on the ball to touch down.

The other points came from a Faulkener try, playing in the unfamiliar inside centre position, and a 16-point haul from fly half Dean Evans that included two tries and three conversions.
