Hereford 2nd XV 53 – Droitwich 2nd XV 0
Saturday, February 26, 2005
Droitwich 2nds travelled to Hereford with one of the youngest teams to ever represent the senior section of Droitwich R.F.C. The Spa side’s inexperience was obvious from the start as a rather more experienced and cohesive Hereford team comfortably put fifty points on them.
Droitwich started quite brightly, despite their underdog status. However, after a couple of early tries, Droitwich players’ heads dropped and the tries continued to rain in.
There were some positives for Droitwich though. For example, during the last twenty minutes of the game they only conceded one try due to some astounding defensive work. This achievement was made even more worthy as for this time period stand-in skipper and influential fly half Dean Evans was carrying not one, but two leg injuries and had to be moved to fullback, with Kevin Priddey moving into the outside half position. As if that wasn’t enough, for approximately 10 minutes of the second half, the Spa side played with only fourteen men due to a serious elbow injury sustained by promising youngster Harry Penwarden. Despite this injury, he bravely went back onto the field to join the away side’s defensive effort.
The Droitwich 2nd Team ‘Man of the Match’ was awarded to another youngster in Tom Chevens. Chevens was moved from his usual back three position and was playing his very first game at scrum half, behind a collectively poor set of forwards, and yet coped and even managed to make some sniping counter attacks.
