Droitwich 2nd XV 10 - Evesham 2nd XV 25

Saturday, January 15, 2005

Droitwich battled well with a ‘thrown together’ team against the reigning Merit Table Champions. Every player deserves praise for their performance, but a special mention goes to Jonno Watkins for playing out of position with a hernia injury, Rab Walker who was dragged from the bar at 2 o’clock, and youngster Rob Burton who bravely stepped up from 3rd team flanker to 2nd team hooker.

The Spa side started well. However, after sustained pressure from Evesham they conceded a well-worked try out wide. The try was unconverted and Droitwich frustrated Evesham by not letting them break through their defences again in the first period.

The good work of Droitwich continued in the second half, reducing the away side’s lead to two points through a Craig Burgess penalty. Evesham replied with a penalty of their own almost immediately. Evesham then showed why they are undefeated in the Merit Table this season, scoring a further three tries.

Despite this, and in true ‘second team spirit’, Droitwich finished the match on a positive note. After a succession of penalties in the Evesham twenty-two, the illustrious Paul Bowditch popped up to go over for one of his trademark tries. Burgess converted the try to make the result deservedly more respectable.
