Droitwich 10 - Ledbury 18
Saturday, January 15, 2005
Droitwich went into this fixture desperately needing two points to help in their battle against the drop.
Ledbury had already visited The Glynn Mitchell Memorial Ground this season in the league. On that occasion they had escaped defeat when the match had to be abandoned with only seven minutes remaining, the match official concussed by a stray kick. Droitwich had been leading 10-7. Despite Droitwich RFC protestations, the RFU ordered the match to be replayed.
Spa started brightly and took the lead through second row Phil Horton after seven minutes. Horton gathered the ball in the loose and broke through three tackles to touch down. Scrum half Gareth Cogan duly converted to give Spa a seven-nil lead. The first half was a very even encounter with Ledbury only scoring a penalty to make the game 7–3 at half time.
The second half was a different story with Droitwich’s persistent infringements handing the game to Ledbury. Ledbury scored two tries and a further penalty to pull away from Spa who could only reply through a Gareth Gogan penalty. Spa played the final ten minutes with only 13 men on the park after having two men sin-binned.
