Pontypridd U16's 0 - Droitwich Black U16's 22

Sunday, December 12, 2004

Sunday, 12th December saw Droitwich RFC's Black under 16 squad travel to Wales to play the mighty Pontypridd Club on the famous “House of Pain” Sardis Road.

From the kick off the home team showed their intention, dominating all the open field exchanges. Droitwich had to display their defensive skills. 16 minutes into the game a home player fell badly in a lineout and suffered a very bad broken leg. The subsequent 30 minute break in the game allowed Droitwich to regroup and the remainder of the half saw signs of Droitwich staking a foothold in the game. Half-time 0-0.

The second half saw Droitwich step up the pace and with the forwards now in complete control winning all phases of the game, the normal speedy backs began to run very good lines.

In the 40th minute, great rucking from the forward pack and swift hands along the back line resulted in Ian Young scoring out wide and converting his own try 7-0. Then, in the 45th minute after another strong scrum, a truly magnificent try was scored in the corner by Stefan Buijnsters. Two superb passes from Alex Shaw and Ian Young had presented Stefan with a run in. The score was now 12-0.

With confidence now flowing through the side, typified by a brilliant 50 metre run by tight head Chad Richardson, it would not be long before further scores would arrive. The 3rd try was a wonderful piece of mazy running by Stefan Buijnsters to take the score to 17-0. The final try, also scored by Stefan Buijnsters, was another piece of total team play allowing Stefan the opportunity of a run in and his own personal tally of 3 tries on the day. Final Score 22-0.

This result was particularly pleasing as over 24 hours prior to the game the side had suffered 5 first choice player withdrawals. The win at Pontypridd served to underline the depth of talent now in the Under 16 section at Droitwich RFC.
