Shipston 0 - Droitwich 5

Saturday, December 11, 2004

After this performance no one should underestimate Droitwich's resolve when it comes to a dogfight. The team as a whole did not take one step backwards under the positive leadership of Nick Godfrey. Playing uphill in the first half on a strength sapping pitch the backs and forwards put in some solid hits which rocked Shipston, a team also seeking to pull away from the bottom of the table.

Not for the first time this season the crowd were left scratching their heads as to why Droitwich had only registered one previous win. The Spa side looking to enjoy playing down the slope in the second half were thwarted when an injury to one of Shipston's backs caused the referee to switch pitches. This unfortunate injury and delay assisted the home side at a time when Droitwich were just beginning to take control.

Mid way through the second period fly-half Andy Gallagher sent a looping miss pass to Gar Knight who sliced through the defence with some straight running to score a well deserved try. Sascha Hobbs just missed the conversion.

The inevitable rally then by the home team was repelled again by the stubborn defensive qualities of the Droitwich players. For the final 10 minutes, back on the original pitch and with some shrewd touchline kicking by Andy Gallagher, Spa put paid to any hopes of a Shipston comeback.

A win, a low score but anyone who thinks the team is going to throw in the towel had better think again.
