Captain's Report - September

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

As I'm sure everyone is aware, results in our first four games have been very poor with losses to Barkers; Stratford; Bridgnorth; and, worst of all, Saturday's 37-14 defeat at the hands of Hereford.

However, the last time we lost our first three league games we picked ourselves up and gained promotion with a last game victory against Old Yardleians. In my eyes that is exactly what we must do this season, starting with Old Leamingtonians on Saturday.

All is not lost as I personally believe we have played three out of the four strongest teams in the league - with the fourth (Old Leams) travelling to us on Saturday.

New additions to the club include player/ coach Travis Mcintyre, Gareth “Lucky” Cogan, Puni and Radu who have all made appearances in the first team this year. Well done lads.

Also on a positive note is the emergence of some of last season's colts - including Sean Walker, James Shewell and Tom Chevens - all of whom have scored tries in the second team this season. Long may it continue, and I'm sure if they continue their hard work at training it will not be long before they make their first team debuts. Well Done.

I would also like to welcome Sascha Hobbs back to the club after a year out. As we all know, if Sasch can keep his mind on rugby(!!!), he can be devastating on the pitch (We have faith in you Sasch. Don't let us down).

Numbers at training have been very good and I can only hope you keep attending, even through the bad times, as I'm very confident we can turn this poor start around. I believe the platform is there, but I have noticed the belief and desire that we had last year is lacking. So, I ask all players to try and dig that little bit deeper and put that extra 20-30% in at training and on match days. If you do so, you will get your rewards. Look at how well the seconds and thirds have started. We must strive to get that will to win that they have. Remember, you will get out what you put in!!!

That's me done for this month chaps, but I hope my monthly report for October will be full of praise for players who have responded to my wishes. Good luck to all DRFC teams for the month ahead.

Many thanks,
Matt Blackmore
