Hereford 37 - Droitwich 14

Saturday, September 25, 2004

This is a report Droitwich coach Travis McIntyre will not want to keep in his scrapbook after Droitwich suffered their fourth straight defeat.

Things looked promising for Spa early on as they took a seven nil lead after five minutes. After a good back move, started by Spa scrum-half Gareth Cogan, Travis McIntyre found himself in oceans of space to run the ball in under the posts. Droitwich captain Matt Blackmore, playing in a full back role, added the extra two points.

A well drilled Hereford side hit back after fifteen minutes through a well worked forward move. Soon after this Droitwich were forced into some changes in the backs after Scrum half Gareth Cogan was carried off with a knee injury. Captain Blackmore replaced Cogan at scrum half and Jamie Faulkener came off the bench to fill in at full back. This shuffle in the backs gave Hereford the upper hand as they went on to score another three unconverted tries before the interval.

The second half began in the same way as the first half ended with Hereford the dominant force. Hereford scored a converted try and slotted home a penalty to all but guarantee the victory with twenty minutes to go. Droitwich grabbed a consolation try with Blackmore kicking through for McIntyre to touch down in the corner. Blackmore converted to put fourteen points on the board for Spa. But it was Hereford who had the last say, running in a well worked try to take the game 37 points to 14.
