Bridgnorth 25 - Droitwich 22
Saturday, September 18, 2004
On a hot afternoon Droitwich took an experimental team away to Bridgnorth to play in the Powergen Intermediate Cup preliminary round.
Droitwich gave starts to youngsters Dean Evans, Ben Thomas, Craig Burgess, and Dean Goddard.
After a tough opening ten minutes Droitwich fell behind to a Bridgnorth try which was then converted. Bridgnorth then piled on the pressure, scoring another converted try and kicking a penalty to go in at half time 17 nil ahead.
The second half began well for Droitwich. Andrew Manns, having replaced the injured front row forward Ben Thomas, made good ground to set up head coach Travis McIntyre for the first of his three tries.
Droitwich then scored again through a superb solo effort from McIntyre from which Evans converted the extra two points. Spa were now trailing by only five points, but a Bridgnorth drop goal gave them an 8 point advantage.
Droitwich pegged Bridgnorth back to 3 points through an unconverted Jamie Faulkener try. However, a Bridgnorth try then sealed the game for the home team. Spa came back at the home team but a late McIntyre try was not enough for the visitors.
