Droitwich 22 – Stratford Upon Avon 32
Saturday, September 4, 2004
Droitwich RFC’s new era under the new management team of Julian Bailey (Director of Rugby); Travis McIntyre (Head Coach); Jonny Andrews (Assistant Coach); and first team captain Matt Blackmore began with a tough game at home against last year’s fourth place team Stratford Upon Avon.
Stratford started the game strongly scoring three unanswered tries in the first thirty minutes. Droitwich went in at half time trailing 15 – 3 after Matt Blackmore had kicked a penalty just before the interval.
Droitwich came out for the second half with all guns blazing scoring 19 unanswered points. Phil Horton went over under the posts for Blackmore to slot over the conversion. This was followed up by a try from Nick Godfrey, who crept over from close range to bring Droitwich back onto level terms.
Then, in the 60th minute, player/ coach Travis McIntyre cut a superb angle from a Blackmore pass to run the ball in from 30 yards out. Blackmore’s conversion gave Droitwich a 7 point lead.
However, Droitwich could not hold onto this lead and some superb forward play from Stratford led to them running out victors by 32 points to 22.
