Report - Sixth Annual Tens Tournament
Thursday, August 19, 2004
The 2004 Droitwich Tens Tournament proved successful for Droitwich RFC both on and off the field.
The tournament is an important fundraiser for the rugby club. Warm weather, coupled with some excellent rugby, ensured that there was a good spectator turnout on the day.
Droitwich RFC fielded two sides and both acquitted themselves well. The first-pick Droitwich side went all the way to the final of the cup competition, but were unfortunately beaten 30-0 by a classy Luctonians team. Droitwich 'A' reached the final of the plate competition where they were narrowly beaten 24-14 by a touring side made up of Fijians and Tongans.
Director of rugby at Droitwich, Julian Bailey, felt the work out was of benefit to Droitwich.
He said: “It was very pleasing. To get both of our sides into the finals was more than we were expecting. It was a very successful afternoon.”
Eight sides entered the tournament, and for many it was the first taste of contact rugby since the end of last season. The action was played at a fierce pace in very warm conditions.
Perhaps the high point of the day came in the cup semi-final where Droitwich vanquished local rivals Pershore in front of the massed ranks of Droitwich RFC's supporters. The players clearly revelled in the support they were given and turned round a half-time deficit to beat Pershore and make the final.
Droitwich gave debuts to Samoan player Puni and new player/ coach Travis McIntyre.
