Droitwich Under 11s back to winning ways

Tuesday 9th February 2010

Droitwich U11s were back to winning ways for their first fixture in 2010. After a long lay-off due to poor weather, they made the trip to face old foes Cheltenham Tigers.

The first game was played out between the respective ‘A’ squads, and both teams battled hard to stamp their authority on the game. Droitwich showed good attacking intent through strong rucking and patiently moving the ball through the phases. In the set piece the line outs were evenly contested and Droitwich showed good composure to contain a strong Cheltenham scrum.

At half time, the game was locked at 0-0 with neither side able to breach committed and robust defending.

The second half saw a resolute Droitwich take the game to Cheltenham; eventually rewarded by a richly deserved score. Moving the ball through several hands, Rhys Samuel took the ball on and his sublime chip and chase resulted in a fine individual try.

Cheltenham fought gamely to bring the scores level, but were unable to break through a well disciplined Droitwich blitz defence. Late pressure nearly resulted in two further scores for Droitwich with both efforts snuffed out by great cover defence from the Cheltenham full back. Final score: Droitwich 5 - Cheltenham 0

In the second game, the respective ‘B’ squads held sway and Cheltenham blazed out of the blocks and raced into a 10-0 half time lead.

Droitwich dug deep and scored 2 good tries of their own, but the final score of 20-10 highlighted Cheltenham’s strength in depth.

Coach Neil Thwaites said, “Overall, this was a welcome and testing workout for all the lads over two keenly contested games. This will stand the whole squad in good stead for the upcoming tough fixtures against the likes of Warley, Ledbury and Worcester.”
