Droitwich U17’s 18 - Shrewsbury U17’s 5

Monday 14th December 2009

Droitwich played host to Shrewsbury for their second match in the Under 17’s League 1 on Sunday 19th December.

From the start Droitwich put Shrewsbury on the back foot, pressing for an early advantage with some aggressive forward play together with some controlled positional kicking by Oliver Swift, to set up a number of opportunities for Droitwich to open the scoring.

Finally after some very good defending by Shrewsbury, Droitwich picked up a kicked ball and proceeded to move forward through the forwards, setting up the backs to move the ball out to the wing where Adam Sutterby dived over to score Droitwich’s first try of the game.

Droitwich continued to press the Shrewsbury defence and were rewarded twice with penalties both converted by Oliver Swift. The lead was extended and the score was 11-0.

As the half drew to a close, Shrewsbury opened their account with a try finishing the half, Droitwich 11 - Shrewsbury 5.

The second half was a close match with both sides pressing for more points. Droitwich took advantage of some well executed moves by their back line to move the ball down the field and Anton Preece took advantage of a gap in the Shrewsbury defence to score Droitwich’s second try which Oliver Swift converted. This was the final score of the match as Droitwich resolutely stopped all Shrewsbury’s attacks but could not convert any more opportunities themselves and the final score was Droitwich 18 - Shrewsbury 5.

Coaches’ comment: A very competitive game which both teams went out to win. Both forwards and backs played their part in an entertaining game with special mentions going to Sam O’Brien, Oliver Swift, Andy Geoghegan, and George Bishop.

Man of the match goes to Sam Cave.
