Droitwich 1st XV narrowly lose away to Old Coventrians

Monday 14th December 2009

Droitwich produced a rather lacklustre performance in Coventry on Saturday letting a 3-17 point half time lead slip to go down by a single point.

The visitors started brightly with a good break by scrum half Steve Poke which saw the fast ball recycled to create an overlap for Mark Strutt to use his upper body strength and power over to score. James Metcalfe added the conversion. The home side hit back with a penalty of their own, before good work by veteran Nick Godfrey saw Andy Manns carry forward.

Matt Barnes made a half break to link with young speedster Jack Pomroy to race over and again Metcalfe converted. This seemed to spur the home side on and their pack came to life. The busy Old Cov’s forwards began to dominate Droitwich who, with the exception of skipper Phil Horton who was superb throughout, were second best in the forward exchanges.

Two quick tries by the home side completely changed the complexion of the game, before a third and a well struck penalty put them in the driving seat but Droitwich were not chasing the game. Alex Saddington went forward to find Simon Pearce on hand to go over, Metcalfe added the extra points as the gap was closed, before he added a penalty to take Droitwich within a point.

This proved to be the final score of the game and left Droitwich ruing their lack of edge in attack and their frailties in defence, a sentiment echoed by Captain Horton, “We really need to liven up. We had chances to win this game and simply refused to take them. If we don’t start putting in the effort, this season is going to spiral downhill very rapidly.”

Final score: Old Coventrians 25 - Droitwich 24
