Kidderminster 18 - Droitwich 5

Tuesday 1st December 2009

Droitwich turned in their poorest performance of the season, being outplayed at Marlpool Lane by a competitive Kidderminster side.

The early exchanges were even, but the home side used their heavy pack to drive at Droitwich around the fringes. The visitors’ tackling was good, although Kidderminster were awarded a penalty which they converted to take the lead.

Droitwich were taking an age to liven up, but a good break by Matt Barnes saw the ball recycled near the home line. It was spun along the line and it looked odds on that Droitwich would score, but wrong options and good defence kept them at bay, before the visitors were penalised for holding on, on the floor.

The half time interval saw the score at 3 nil to Kidderminster and from the start of the second period they looked the more dangerous; forcing Droitwich to do some desperate defence with James Davies and veteran Nick Godfrey producing some good tackles before confusion in the home defence saw a kick charged down and Kidderminster went over for the first try of the game to take a 10 points to nil lead.

More strong running by the home side, who by now were by far the superior side, saw them go over in the corner to extend their lead and further add to it with a penalty.

Droitwich finally seemed to wake up and try and get into the game. A neat break by James Metcalfe found Chris Hooper in support.  He released Barnes to throw a long pass to Simon Pearce to go over in the corner to get Droitwich on the score board.

This proved to be the last action of the game, as the final whistle brought an end to Droitwich’s poorest and most lacklustre display of the campaign. If they continue to play like this the rest of the season is going to be a difficult experience. A sentiment added to by captain Phil Horton, who said “We really were not in the game today. I am very disappointed about the whole display.”
