Droitwich Under 16’s versus Bromsgrove RFC

Sunday 5th October 2008

This was an early season derby with both teams looking to consolidate their position as leading sides in the Worcestershire area.

Droitwich, looking to return to the form of last season, pressed from the start with their forwards providing a level of control and power which Bromsgrove found hard to match. The backs joined in the fray with some excellent attacking moves and aggressive defensive tackling when required.

Due to the pace of the game errors began to appear as the half drew to a close with a loose pass from Droitwich presenting Bromsgrove with an unlikely opportunity to intercept and run in under the posts for a try which they duly converted to give a first half score of Bromsgrove 7 - Droitwich 0.

The second half continued with Droitwich dominating the play in the forwards and backs with Bromsgrove producing some impressive defending to keep their slender lead. Eventually the Droitwich pressure was rewarded after both forwards and backs combined to drive Bromsgrove into a defensive position on their try line, with Josh Sutterby crashing over in the corner making it a two point game.

Droitwich from the restart pressed to gain the lead and it was only through some dogged defending that Droitwich did not produce more tries in the remaining minutes. However, credit must be given to their perseverance.

As the clock ran down Droitwich forced a penalty from a now tiring Bromsgrove team, which was successfully kicked by Oliver Swift. This was the last action of the game giving a final score of Droitwich 8 - Bromsgrove 7.

Coach’s comments: It is difficult to single out players in such an entertaining match as all played their part. Overall each element of the team played with commitment and determination to produce a performance to be proud of.

Man of the Match: Luke Topping, for an outstanding performance.
