Droitwich 2nd XV 63 – Dudley Kingswinford 4th XV 3

A young Droitwich side turned in an impressive display against Dudley Kingswinford 4ths at home on Saturday.

Droitwich took the lead after five minutes when skipper Ben Thomas broke from the back of a catch and drive to power over the line. DK responded soon after with a penalty in front of the posts.

The half then descended into stalemate as DK began to dominate the breakdown area. But 10 minutes before half time Will Baillon broke free of the DK defence to run in an excellent 50 metre try under the posts. Dean Evans added the simple conversion. Droitwich went in at the break 12-3 up.

Droitwich started the second half knowing they had to be more competitive around the breakdown if they were to win the game. Tom Rogers and the rest of the Droitwich forwards obliged and gave good ball for Craig Burgess and Dean Evans, who both had impressive games at scrum half and fly half respectively.

Super sub Mark Strutt came off the bench at half time to grab two quick tries at the beginning of the half, then Will Baillon scored his second of the game after good work by youngster Sam Davenport in the Droitwich back line.

Captain Ben Thomas then went over for a brace after taking a quick tap penalty and spotting a gap in the opposition defence.

Alan Simpson then made a break up field, drew the full back then passed to Mark Strutt who ran in under the posts to seal his hat trick. In the final minutes a superb back line move lead to Ian Bartlett scoring in the corner to seal the rout for Droitwich.

After the game skipper Ben Thomas said “This was a top notch performance and as a squad we must strive to play at this level week in week out. We have a good mix of young and old, and the lads who have come up from the colts really stepped up to the mark today. We must build on this result and not get complacent after such an emphatic win.”
