Droitwich U15’s 17 - Bridgnorth U15’s 5
Sunday 2nd December 2007
This hastily arranged fixture saw Droitwich visiting Bridgnorth. The game was not only about two sides against each other but who could master the elements and a less than forgiving pitch where the overnight rain and the blustery cross wind challenged the resolve of both teams.
From the start Droitwich tried to play their expansive style of rugby but it quickly became apparent that what was required was a more focused and direct method of play.
The Droitwich forwards quickly took control and utilised their scrimmaging skills to repeatedly drive Bridgnorth back towards their try line only to have Bridgnorth clear their lines with some wind assisted kicking.
As the half progressed Droitwich forwards and backs continued to work as a single unit with the forwards moving the ball down the field and condensing the play, allowing the backs to put together some exciting phases of passing play. A very organised forward unit supported the backs through these phases and they culminated with Matt Watts running in for Droitwich’s first try.
The second half started much the same way as the first finished, with Droitwich forwards and backs working together producing phase after phase of quick ball rugby, pressing Bridgnorth who responded with some very concerted defensive tackling and kicking.
Droitwich continued to dominate both forward and backs play and were rewarded with a second try by Sam Cave when some quick thinking produced an opening after a line out set move. Sam also converted the try.
After the restart Droitwich forwards pressed home their advantage with some committed phases allowing the backs to score the team’s third and Matt Watts’ second try of the game. Bridgnorth didn’t concede defeat lightly and continued to play to the final whistle and were rewarded with a try in the final minutes of the game.
Final Score Droitwich 17 - Bridgnorth 5.
Coach’s Special Mention: This must go to the whole team—they adapted to the conditions and worked as a unit in both defence and attack. Well done!
Man of the Match: Connor O’Donnell for a superb all round performance.
