Droitwich 34 - Old Leamingtonians 21

Saturday 24th March 2007

Droitwich stayed on course for the league title with a hard earned victory over a very competitive Old Leamingtonians side at the Memorial Ground on Saturday.

The early exchanges were even, although a fine lineout take by Phil Horton saw the home pack drive forward for prop Matt Jupp to muscle his way over to score. Duncan Hughes added the tricky conversion.

The visitors hit back and always looked dangerous with the ball in hand. A flowing move down the three quarter line saw them score to draw level. Hughes restored Droitwich’s lead with two well struck penalties just before the interval.

The second period began with Old Lems pressurising Droitwich and a rare mistake from fly half Hughes saw his kick charged down for the visitors to score and regain their lead.

Droitwich, to their credit, did not panic and worked their way up field. Two more fine penalty kicks by Hughes saw them back in the lead before a cutting break by the ever impressive Nick Godfrey saw him find Craig Goode in support to barge his way over. Old Lems hit back, but it was only the excellent cover defence of Horton that kept them out.

Hughes now made a break, found Richard Allen in support, who then fed the livewire Leon Hopkins who jinked his way over the line to score the decisive try. Again Hughes converted.

The visitors rallied again and managed to force their way over for a score, but it was too late to affect the result.

Droitwich now have as good as sealed the league title, but with two games to go they will be looking for an unbeaten campaign.

Skipper Dean Goddard added after the game “We weren’t at our best today, but we dug deep and won. We are absolutely determined to win our last two games and remain unbeaten and cap an outstanding season for Droitwich Rugby Club.”
