Droitwich 41 - Worcester Wanderers 0

Saturday, 3rd March, 2007

Droitwich turned in a mixed performance at the Memorial Ground on Saturday, but still ran out 41 nil victors.

Despite the heavy overnight rain the pitch was in good condition. Droitwich had the advantage of the wind in the first half but were constantly guilty of handling errors and generally sloppy play. They did however manage a touchdown from a line out catch and drive, with the reliable Nick Godfrey getting the score.

This is how the score remained until Droitwich reorganised, bringing on scrum half Steve Poke. Rich Allen moved to the wing and immediately a loose drop out found its way into his hands. He then ran strongly, beating two defenders to score under the posts.

This seemed to be the stroke of fortune that the home side needed to raise their game. Strong running by full back Ben Cottrell and centre Sean Walker gave Allen another run at the line which he took with delight. Duncan Hughes added the conversion to make the half time score 19 points to nil.

Droitwich started the second period with much more vigour, with the forwards taking the ball to Worcester. Jon Andrews and Matt Jupp were both strong in this department, with Craig Goode, James Davies and Dean Goddard offering powerful back up.

Droitwich won a scrum on half way for No.8 Phil Horton to pick up. He shrugged off the attention of three tacklers before showing a remarkable turn of speed to out pace the cover defence and scorch in for one of the individual tries of the season.

A catch and drive at a lineout saw the pack drive over for the excellent Godfrey to get his second touch down. A neat break by scrum Steve Poke, found Ross Coombes in support, who fed Walker who chipped the full back to race home for another try. Coombes applied the final touches, dummying his way to the line.

After the game team manager Paul Walker added “we seemed to take an age to get out of second gear today, but when we did we played some top class rugby. We’ll remain focused until the end of the league campaign.”

With four games to go Droitwich are still unbeaten and on course for the league title.
