Droitwich 46 - Keresley 0

Sunday, 28th January, 2007

Two well taken tries by young winger Mark Strut were the highlights of Droitwich’s comprehensive victory on Saturday that keeps them four points clear at the top of the table.

Droitwich started the game at a blistering pace, with Ross Coombes making a break before linking with Ben Cottrell who made good ground to feed Strut who powered in from 40 metres.

Next it was Strut making the yardage to pass inside to Sean Walker who dummied and cut inside for another fine try. Duncan Hughes added the conversion.

Again it was the three-quarters making ground, before back row man Phil Horton surged forward. Cottrell was then on hand to take the final pass and sprint home from 20 metres.

After this initial blitz it was inevitable that Droitwich could not maintain the tempo and the rest of the half was somewhat error strewn.

However, Droitwich did manage two further scores in the half. A miss pass by Hughes found Teddy Jones who squeezed in at the corner. The final action of the half saw Droitwich drive a lineout for Nick Godfrey to get the score.

The second period was less impressive, although credit must go to Keresley who tackled well and turned over possession on a number of occasions.

Strong running from Walker saw the home side quickly recycle possession for No.8 Jimmy Richardson to power his way over.

Strut then showed excellent acceleration to out sprint the cover defence to go over for his second try of the game.

In the final moments Droitwich pressed for another score, with both Godfrey and Horton held up short before James Davies used his strength to force his way over.

Captain, Dean Goddard, who made his first start for three months following knee surgery, was clearly very pleased with the result, “Keresley defended very well and really challenged us at the breakdown, but we put pace on the ball and ran in some excellent tries, managing to keep a clean sheet as well.”
