Droitwich 6 - Old Halesonians 30

Sunday, 29th January, 2006

Droitwich turned in another below par performance on Saturday and were well beaten by a much more lively Old Halesonians side. To be fair the strong icy wind made running rugby difficult, but Droitwich never seemed to get out of first gear.

Pressure on outside half Matt Blackmore forced a charge down for Old Hales to open the scoring despite the best efforts of full back Chris Hooper. Some sloppy defence then allows the visitors to increase their advantage. Droitwich hit back with a penalty by Blackmore.

The second period saw the Spa side with the wind in their favour, but again they seemed short of ideas in attack, and despite a period of territorial advantage never really looked like crossing the visitor’s line. Blackmore closed the deficit with another penalty, but more lose defence saw Old Hales break up the field to score again and effectively end the contest. The final quarter saw the visitors dominate, who were far more positive at the breakdown and with ball in hand. Poor defence saw another try leaked, and a final nail was driven home with a late try.

This was Droitwich’s poorest display of the campaign that puts to an end any lingering hopes of promotion. They now have to re-group to ensure a respectable league position is obtained.
