Mark Edwards

Tuesday, 1st November, 2005

It is with the greatest sadness that I have to report the death, during the early hours of Tuesday 1st November 2005, of Mark Edwards. Mark was taken to hospital after collapsing during the Droitwich Vets versus Worcester Vets match at the Memorial Ground on Saturday 29th October 2005.

Mark was small in stature but a giant in the junior rugby scene, particularly at Droitwich RFC where he coached and was the mentor to very many young players, a number of whom are currently in the first team squad. He was also fully involved in coaching girls and ladies to county standard, as well as at Droitwich, Worcester and Malvern. His knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment will be sadly missed.

Mark fell ill playing the game he loved and to which he was totally devoted. He has played with many members in the 2nd and 3rd XV over the years, but I think his coaching skills will be what he should be most remembered for. He did not need inviting twice to play on Saturday for us, he was as enthusiastic as any I have ever met.

He was a thoroughly nice guy, one who was prepared to help anyone both on and off the pitch. The legacy he has left will remain with us on the pitch for years to come.

On behalf of everyone associated with our club, and the rugby community, I extend our deepest sympathy to his partner Julie, and family.

Thank you Mark for all your hard work and comradeship.
