Old Halesonians 3 - Droitwich 25

Sunday 23rd October 2005

Droitwich turned in their best all-round performance of the season to make light of a potentially difficult fixture at Old Halesonians.

The visitors started brightly and immediately pressured the Old Hales line. A good line-out take by Paul Sweeney was driven forward by the Droitwich No.8, for hooker Dean Goddard to get the score. Shortly afterwards a sharp break by Ben Cottrell found Leon Hopkins in support. Hopkins passed to skipper Nick Godfrey to score the touch down.

The home side rallied before half time and hit back with a penalty.

Droitwich upped the tempo in the second half and solid defence forced an error in the Old Hales handling. Godfrey seized on the loose ball, fed Cottrell, who then burst through two tackles before scorching in from 80 metres for a superb try.

More good work by the Droitwich pack saw the ball move down the backline for Leon Hopkins to add another try to his tally. Blackmore added the conversion and a penalty to give Droitwich a comfortable lead.

The home side rallied in the last quarter, but again the Droitwich defence was more than up to the challenge.

This was an excellent win for Droitwich, who have managed to transfer their cup form to their league campaign after an indifferent start.
