Droitwich 2nd XV 38 - Old Yardleians 2nd XV 17

Saturday 23rd April 2005

Droitwich 2nd Team won their last home game of the season with a hard fought victory over Old Yardleians second-string side.

The Spa side dominated the first half, with the score at half time 24-0 to the home team. This score-line was thanks to tries from Simon Pearce, Paul Bowditch, Ian Bartlett and Nick Carter. Carter converted two of these four tries, taking over the kicking duties in the absence of Second Team fly half Dean Evans.

Old Yardleians performed better in the second half, and the rather bizarre sending off (for dissent) of their fullback seemed to help their cause. They applied some sustained pressure to Droitwich 2nds and due to individual errors and missed tackles managed to cross the Spa try line three times.

However, Droitwich 2nd Team soon refocused and scored another two tries. The first came from the outstanding scrum half Max Spurgeon, who did not put a foot wrong all day. The other try was scored by the equally impressive fullback Ian Bartlett, after some shoddy work in the centres by Rob Owen was skilfully tidied up by captain Craig Goode, who then released Bartlett with a superb one handed pass.

This game has become a vital part of the build up to the eagerly awaited Jack Andrews Trophy games versus Worcester, as several Droitwich players impressed, despite playing in unfamiliar positions.
