Droitwich 10 - Ledbury 7

Saturday 18th December 2004

This match was brought to an abrupt end when the game had to be abandoned. The referee suffered concussion when he was struck on the side of the head by a ball kicked by Droitwich scrum half Craig Burgess.

This was a game that both teams needed to win. Ledbury initiated the scoring with a try in the first few minutes out on the left, a score well converted from a difficult angle.

The fighting spirit of the Droitwich side reappeared again this week. Jamie Faulkner mid way through the first half cut in from his wing and tore through the heart of the Ledbury defence to score beneath the posts. Andy Gallagher converted, and he later kicked a penalty for Droitwich to lead 10-7 at the break.

Scoring opportunities were few and far between in a tense match. In a moment of drama mid way through the second half the Ledbury full back hit an upright with a penalty kick. The ball bounced back into play and was then cleared by the home team.

The referee’s decision to abandon the game 7 minutes from the end now leaves a decision for the RFU as to whether the score stands or whether the game has to be replayed. Both teams, for different reasons, will be anxious to hear the decision.
